Lipari is the largest island of the
archipelago, once known as the trade centre of obsidian and renowned today
as the main centre for pumice stone. The island is the most complex from
a geological and volcanogical point of view. |

Porticello
and acquacalda |

Guests depart by coach from the port
and will reach as first site “porticello” and “acquacalda”
where the obsidian outflows and pumice quarries are.

Quattropiani

The drive continues to “quattropiani”,
“pianoconte”, “quattrocchi” to admire, amongst a
variety of colours, picturesque inlets with high slender rocks which reflect
in the sea. In the background the smoking vulcano rises from the sea.

Marina lunga
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
The excursion continues to the most
important centre of lipari. Part of the city extends along the two picturesque
inlets of “marina lunga” and a part is distributed around its
castle, the antique acropolis of greek and roman town, which rises majestically
on a high liparitic lava rock, with titanic sixteenth century bastions sheer
above the sea.

The
aeolian museum
|

|
|
|
|
|
Guests will visit the aeolian museum
where there are treasures from numerous excavation campaigns carried out
on the acropolis, in the prehistoric stations discovered in the smaller
islands, in the greek and roman necropolis of lipari.

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
On completion of the visit inside
the museum, guests will return to the nearby landing pier on foot.
