Upon arrival you will be taken to
the higher village of Anacapri by cable cars where guests can choose between
taking the chair lift up to Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island
boasting spectacular views, or visiting Villa San Michele, built on the
ruins of one of Tiberius' palaces. The villa was formerly an old convent,
taken over by the Swedish doctor and author, Axel Munthe, who made it his
home. Dr. Menthe became famous for his autobiographic Story of San Michele
(1929) in which he describes his long journeys that end with his finding
the ideal life at San Michele: a simple lifestyle in nature's magnificent
surroundings. The villa is now a museum of his antiques and furnishings. |
